Definition |
A protein that was initially identified as an antibacterial enzyme located in egg whites of Embden goose, but is now known to exist in both mammals and fish. Lysozyme catalyzes hydrolysis of most bacterial cell walls by cleaving the beta-1,4 glycosidic bond between N-acetyl-d-glucosamine (NAG) and N-acetylmuramic acid (NAM) in the peptidoglycan layer. It contains one copy of the Transglycosylase SLT domain (Pfam:PF01464).
